Frequently Asked Questions — New Slate Roof in Macclesfield
How long does a new slate roof last?
Natural slate is one of the most durable roofing materials available and can last 80–100 years or more when properly installed and maintained. High-quality synthetic slate alternatives typically carry a lifespan of 30–50 years, making both options an excellent long-term investment for your Macclesfield home.
Do I need planning permission for a new slate roof in Macclesfield?
In most cases, a like-for-like roof replacement does not require planning permission under permitted development rights. However, if your property is in a conservation area or is listed, restrictions may apply. Apex Roofing can advise you during your free survey and help you understand any local requirements.
What is the difference between natural and synthetic slate?
Natural slate is quarried stone — most commonly Welsh or Spanish — offering unmatched authenticity and longevity. Synthetic slate is manufactured from fibre-cement or polymer materials, making it lighter, more uniform, and less expensive. Both look attractive and perform well; the right choice depends on your budget, property type, and personal preference.
How long will the installation take?
The duration depends on the size and complexity of your roof. A typical semi-detached house in Macclesfield can usually be re-roofed in 3–7 working days. Larger or more complex projects may take longer. Apex Roofing will give you a realistic timeframe as part of your free quotation.
Will my home be protected from the weather during the installation?
Absolutely. Our team works methodically, stripping and re-covering sections of your roof in a planned sequence to minimise exposure. We use temporary waterproof underlays where necessary to ensure your home stays protected throughout the process, whatever the Cheshire weather decides to do.
Do you offer a guarantee on your roofing work?
Yes — Apex Roofing stands behind the quality of its workmanship. We provide a written guarantee on all new slate roof installations, giving you complete confidence that any issues arising from our work will be rectified promptly and without additional cost to you.
Is slate roofing suitable for all property types in Macclesfield?
Slate is highly versatile and suits a wide range of property styles, from traditional Victorian and Edwardian homes — common throughout Macclesfield — to modern new-builds. Our team will assess your roof structure and recommend the most appropriate slate type and fixing method for your specific property during the free survey.
